I am flying into Auckland on August 7th and out of Christchurch on
September 1st.
How should I divide my time? I am planning one week north Island and
rest south Island.
We will be sightseeing with small amount of sking.
I am planning to drop the car at the ferry and pick one up on the
south Island.
Out of the mountains, what will the weather be like?
Thanks in advance,
Doug Clark

Sounds OK, really depends on what you like to do.

Cold [it being winter & all]. Snow outside the mountains is possible but
unlikely.

As it is winter & you are planning to go skiing, make sure your car comes
with chains. You will almost certainly be required to carry chains on the
skifield roads & may need to show that you are carrying them on some of the
alpine passes. Where are you planning to ski? The snow has finally come &
by Sunday all ski fields in the SI should be up & running.
Coastal weather will vary eg in Chch today the max was 6, with rain - yuk -
but in August you could reasonably expect 10 -13 and sunshine.
