Anyone's guess.
Check out sites such as www.qantas.com www.airnz.com
www.orbtiz.com www.hotwire.com www.united.com
Check with your local travel agent who has availability to other
airlines & fares.
Subscribe to email updates from Qantas, Air NZ, United etc as often
they have web only specials.
At this time, it is a little too earlier for the airlines to start on
their reducing October airfares.

not going to give exact prices but it may be cheaper to fly via Europe than
via the west coast. It always seem more expensive to fly via the Pacific.
Hope this gives you a few more options

Second thought, how long do you want to go for?
If more than 30 days, any web only fares generally won't apply as
usually they are only for 30 days max.

I just booked flights from Raleigh, NC to Sydney for the end of
November and I can tell you that it pays to keep checking for cheap
fares. I caught a very short time fare offer through Travelocity from
Qantas that got me an LAX -> SYD flight for $970 US (all taxes
included) for a >30 day stay fare. The fare was only available through
travelocity.com (could not even price it from Qantas' own web site)
and only lasted for about 5 days. I then booked the US internal
flights separately and all up it ended up costing LAX flights for $280 a seat.
Cheers,
Brian

Booking two flights is fine IF you are savvy enough to realise the
problems that can sometimes happen and are prepared for them.
Ensure you are familiar with all the Rules & Regulations with each
ticket.

Not so.
I priced out a ticket going east and it was extremely expensive.
You also have to consider the flight time.
Pacific fares to Australia & NZ are always expensive period.
Sometimes you can get a super deal by going via Singapore but you
really have to look hard for these.

OK, you've piqued my curiosity. What specific types of problems can
occur with booking two separate tickets? As far as I know the two
tickets I have don't have any conflicts, and I find it hard to believe
that you would have trouble with two separate tickets as long as you
leave yourself sufficient time to make any connections. For example, I
opted for a 4 hour layover in LAX on the return leg just in case of
any issues in customs. I could see that the two independent airlines
might not be sympathetic if you missed a flight due to a late incoming
flight on another airline. Outside of this what else could be a
problem?
Cheers,
Brian
