Visa and Mastercard are both almost universally accepted.

Fees are charged by the issuing bank - nothing to do with Australian banks -
so you need to check with your bank!!

Debit cards work fine - Australian ATM's are affiliated with Maestro,
Cirrus, Plus and all the other usual operating systems!

Not a problem to put your credit card into credit and take cash advances.
Any charges will be from your own bank not from Australian Banks.

It would be no different from when we travel overseas. We do exactly the
same thing and have never had a problem in any country that we have visited.

Yes - as of a little over a year ago, merchants (etc) were allowed to add
the discount on to prices if you paid by CC (e.g. 2% discount on $100
purchase = $102 or, technically, $102.04 if they did the maths correctly);
QF was and may still be doing this. How wide spread the practice is, I
dunno.

It's not a problem in Australia - I have had a problem with doing this in
the developing world, however.

Beware that some private ATMs (e.g. the ones you find in bars and pokies,
not banks) DO add a surcharge onto the transaction, not just what your bank
charges you. Still, the exchange rate is usually better and so it's worth
while for larger debits, provided you're comfortable walking around with
excess cash for a couple days.

It's increasing, albeit very slowly and quietly (natch). The major telco
now does the same thing - pay by CC, pay an additional 1% (or thereabouts).

Have not seen it yet at any major department stores or restaurants.

Only Qantas and Telstra that I know of. Even the supermarkets - who operate
on far lower margins - have resisted the temptation to add a surcharge for
credit cards.

I've just paid for my round the world tickets etc, using my credit card
to get the free travel insurance (quoted at AUD580) - and been charged
an extra 1% by the travel agent (about AUD75) so I reckon I'm still ahead :)

Good answers from everyone else. I would just add:

- Mastercard has a slight edge, as many taxis will not take Visa

- If your bank cash card is on the Maestro or Cirrus network, you can also
use it in ATMs (cash machines) to get cash, but check with your home bank
about the fees involved.

Taxi's (in Sydney at least) have been accepting Visa for some time.

The reason for them not accepting them previously was the fact they
wanted to charge a surcharge for paying with card (be it visa, m/c, amex,
cabcharge or other) and Visa wouldn't allow that.

With the new government regulations Visa couldn't stop it even if they
wanted to. Problem solved.

Scott.
