Default Kalgoorlie or Bunbury?

Hi

I am planning a very short (1.5/2 days) trip from Perth by train and wanted
to know if anyone has any recommendations on which place would be better for
such a short time (and we'd have no transport at destination). I think I'd
prefer Kalgoorlie, but with train times, etc, we'd arrive late at night, so
would have more time if we went to Bunbury.

Thanks for any help/advice.

II'd opt for Burbury then, when you get of the train the public
transport system is timed to arrive when the train does, and depart
also. Seems to be a reasonable public transport system in Bunbury,
although I haven't used it but spent most of the year before last on
Westrail buses and trains

Depends what you like doing though too I guess, not sure there's a lot
of touristy things you can do in Bunbury but it is well serviced.

I'd go for Kal - the time of arrival doesn't matter much since it doesn't
really close down. It's not a family destination, however 8-). If you've
not taken in a goldfield area, or a (legal!) two-up game, those are musts.

Kalgoorlie is about 8-hrs each way but much more history to see and close
together - I think you could see it without transport. Bunbury is about
2-hrs, nice but fairly suburban - the things to see are more the harbour,
back beach & lighthouse, some old buildings.

Thanks for that. I reckon I'll go for Kalgoorlie; it would be a shame to
get so near to Margaret River and not get to the wineries, so we'll do that
next time!

Oh, forgot about the wineries - for mine they aren't much different from
bottle shops, it doesn't do it much good to rattle round in your boot till
you get home and you can't drink & drive. You feel like you are getting away
from the sheep in Kalgoorlie.

If you go to Bunbury by train you will
Leave Perth at 9:00 am arriving Bunbury 12:00 midday
Leave Bunbury 2:45pm arriving Perth at about 5:00pm
I will leave it up to you to decide how much you will see in
2 hours 45 minutes

Two words: Two-up and brothels. Go Kal.

There are also (legit!) brothel tours - the place with the green sign at the
end of Hay St. is the one that springs to mind ($25 in 2001, no video or
photos allowed). Down the road is a corrugated-tin spot with several doors
cut into it (think of Rowan and Martin's Laugh-in and you'll get the idea),
painted in pink and white flowers. There are lights above the doors - red,
naturally - which I suppose are to indicate "occupied" or "vacant." I
didn't ask.

.......or catch the early train next morning about 6am. But 16 hours would
have to cut into a trip to Kalgoorlie.

I dunno, I'm no prude but to me there is something off about coach tours of
a brothel, I guess you could pay at any local one for a look around. And
2-up, shit the miners only did that because there was no TV and the tourists
ape them. What about Mt Charlotte res, the pipeline, the Hainolt? mine,
water supply problems & moonscaping the area for wood & mines, the huge slag
dumps, the population comparable to Perth's and influence during federation,
steam trains which ran to Coolgardie every 10 minutes............. Now go
away and come back with something better than a sniff round a brothel and a
few useless pennies. Teacher. BTW I have no commercial interest here, just
really liked Kalgoorlie the times I have been there.

You can do that without leaving Perth. Spend your Burswood winnings
across the road at Langtree's.

Note that the Bunbury railway station is a bit out of town, but the station
at Kalgoorlie
is right in town. At this time of the year Kalgoorlie is a good place to
walk around.
You will be able to walk up to Mt Charlotte, but you need to step over a
barrier on
the bypass road as pedestrians are not catered for at all.

Easier is the museum at the top end of Hannan St. The Miners Hall of Fame
is apparently
worth a whole day but it's a bit out of town. There may be tours or taxis
there. Not sure if the
two-up's still going.

Kalgoorlie has some public transport during the day, but services are
infrequent, the timetables
don't have maps and each bus seems to have different deviations to the last
one. Nevertheless
it's OK for travel to Boulder. You can get a bus to a tourist railway at
Boulder. There's also
blasting in the Super Pit and helicopter rides.

There's a wildlife part in the north of town. This has a few kangaroos and
emus. And a very
nice rotunda. Entry free. Near botanic garden and town cemetry. A good
walk from town.

The over-rated 'red light district' appears to comprise three
establishments - two tin sheds
and a brick place. It's normally very quiet and not much happens. Most of
the time the
women seem to sit on chair in front of doorway watching TV or reading book.

There are lots of beggars (you will be begged about once every 1-2 days)
and the ground is
impregnated with broken glass everywhere you look. The stormwater drainage
system is uniquely
primitive, and you sometimes have to jump across! Nevertheless it's a fine
old town and I'd
recommend it.

Margs I had a day to spend in Kal last year, and there are a number of
places to see.
The brothel tour is quite entertaining, and they have spent a fortune on
memorabilia, ssuch as football and cricket stuff, there is also the Alan
Bond painting of Peter Matera plus enough to keep ypu amused for a
couple of hours. The tour itself is very good as it takes you through
all the theme rooms. Plus they have a coffee shop and some nice home
made cake, I asked the cook if she provided any other services before I
let her cut me a slice. :-)
The mining industry has a museum at the top of the street and again it
is well worth your while.
The open cut mine is another great thing to look at and you get there on
a small train.
The two up has been closed for a fair while and is really a dump very
disappointing when you go out to broad arrow to look.
there a couple of twenty four hour restaraunts that have good food and
are pretty cheap.
There is plenty of other things to do so if you pick Kal you will have a
good time
