How to divide time between north and south islands, NZ?

Hey all,
Hope some of you can help us make the right decision on this.
We're planning a vacation in NZ next Feb.
The usual route Auckland to Christchurch. At least 30 days, 40 if we
can afford it.
We want to keep as much of our plans as fluid as possible (we're
bringing the kids, you know...).
So, it seems the main limiting factor is when do we cross from North
Island to South Island (mainly due to high season reservations)
Can anyone help out here? Any rules of thumb?
>From what we've read so far, it seems like more time is needed for the
South Island than the North. But at what proportions?
Thank y'all
Allen

Hi Allen,
I'm going to be doing sort of the same trip.
My wife and I decided on spliting it half and half.
We had no better opinion to base our decision on.
Anyway, you might still want to make some reservations, at least on the
north island since you'll be there first and it will be closer to high
season then.
Hope this helps

No reserevations .... not usually necessary ..... I prefer the north but
most prefer the southI'd say 50-50.

depends on what you are looking for..I personally prefer the scenery in the south island so would split it 30/70. Spend more time south than north..but if you have never been there I guess 50/50 is the best option

Between Wellington and Picton.
Some rental companies have you leave a car at one end, travel across
and pick up another car at the other side.

Thanks for the info, Cath.
I'll make sure to ask about that when I make my reservation.
