Do you guys think its worth buying a hostel membership? I'll be spending 4
weeks in New Zealand, and 8 weeks in Australia.
If so, what type of membership do you think I should buy?

Yes - the savings (at a buck or two per night) will more than pay for the
membership. You can also sometimes get minor discounts (5-15%) on some
services and merchandise (cars, tours, film, gear).
I recommend getting a hostelling international membership - it's good
worldwide - Canadian ones are accepted at YHAs in Australia and vice-versa.
Quality and coziness of accommodation varies widely.

Yes, my VIP one paid for itself just on the discount on my Greyhound bus
ticket.

VIP, Nomads, and YHA have various discounts as well as "member's rates" at
hostels. YHA is valid worldwide. Can't speak for the others.

by the way, hostel memberships are absolutely worth the investment; they are
clean, affordable and it gives the opportunity to meet new friends. in
fact, often the hostel has tours for it's guests...which the members go on
together....![Wink](https://britishexpats.com/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif)

Karen,
It's duck soup. All you need for a tourist visa is your passport, a ticket,
and an ETA - electronic travel authority. Any decent-sized agent can
arrange it for you....and last time, even the less-than-helpful folks at Air
Canada got it for me for free.
Longer-term visas require a direct application to the Australian High
Commission in Ottawa.
Work and working holiday visas can be a PITA from what I understand.
