Default Firsttime backpacker in Oz.

Hi Guys,

In november of this year I will be heading to Melbourne, Australia! Whoohoo!
I just can't wait.
Anyway, as this is my first time, I've got tons and tons of questions. I
won't harras you with all my
questions

Anyway, I think I will be travelling by bus, train or plain (for the longer
distances). What do you guys
think of booking it in advance? Is it possible to just do that a few days
ahead? I was thinking about
buying an Ozzy KM pass (Greyhound bus co.). Should I do that now, over the
Internet or is it
also possible to book it when I arrive in Australia.

About the hostels: what is your general opinion or experience: should I book
a few days in advance
or can you just drop in? Thanks for the info!

Regards,

Vincent

I've never had a problem booking onto a Greyhound/McCaffertys bus with 24
hours notice. I wouldn't rely on that if I needed to be somewhere by a
certain date, but these things usually aren't critical when backpacking.

Trains are another matter entirely. They can get booked up weeks in
advance, especially in the holiday season.

For planes, I think it varies hugely depending on the route.

Unless they're doing internet deals, I'd leave it until you get there. If
you have a VIP card, you'll get a discount off the ticket which will
probably pay for the price of the VIP card. And then you get $1 a night
off in many of the hostels.

Again, it depends how busy they are. In Cairns, for example, there are so
many hostels, you're not going to have a problem finding somewhere. When
you turn up at the bus station, there will be a fleet of minibuses with
people waving their placards. Byron Bay has often been a problem for me,
especially in the school holidays.

It can be a good idea to book a couple of days in advance. Talk to the
people travelling in the opposite direction to get recommendations.
