Ferry from Melbourne to Tasmania
G'day,
My husband and I are going to stay with my family in Melbourne for Christmas
& New Years (03/04) and we are hoping to catch a ferry to Tasmania for a
quick visit (two days or so). I have found the website for the 'Spirit of
Tasmania' which does daily runs from Melbourne to Devonport but $130 one-way
seems it seems a little steep for a two day visit and I was wondering is
there another option, for example, another ferry or even a flight?

Plenty of flights (Qantas) plus some smaller operators, but at that time of
year its likely just as expensive, maybe more so.

You might find a cheaper flight. Bear in mind it's overnight (not a short
trip), so you effectively save on a hotel bill for the two nights
travelling.

Melbourne to Launceston and have flights as cheap as $95 one way betwen
Christmas and New Year.

Thanks for your help guys! I think the better option will be to fly. It will
be a quicker trip and we'll get to see more of the island during our quick
visit!
Thanks again... :-)

They also fly Melbourne - Hobart which, for whatever reason, was cheaper at
the end of 2002 than Melbourne-Launceston. Both worked out cheaper than the
ferry, and that was WITH the Ansett levy ($10 each way as I recall).
