Default Driving through Sydney

My question is about driving - from Melbourne to Brisbane via Sydney.
We will be driving up the coast from Melbourne, coming through
Woolongong, then want to go on to Brisbane - not stopping in Sydney.
Can you advise the best route to take to get through Sydney with
minimum hassle and minimum traffic. Thanks!

Not really a direct answer to your question, but I do this each year.
You'll need to check the map for specifics.
As a tourist, you have to go over the bridge, just to say you did it.

I plan to be passing through the CBD between 10 and 11:30 am or 1:30 -3
pm, to avoid peak hour and lunch-time. I use the freeway from Wollongong
when I'm in a hurry, but come up the old coastal road when I'm not. And
I just follow my nose (and usually highway 1) through the city, onto the
bridge, and then up the Pacific Highway to Hornsby. Then you get a
choice of the expressway or the old, more scenic, Pacific Highway. Allow
between one and two hours from the end of the Wollongong freeway to
Hornsby. And make sure you spend the night somewhere with a view of
Broken Bay.

Hopefully a Sydneysider can give you a specific road-plan answer if you
truly want speed and don't want to see the harbour.

Cheers, Alan

FORGET the CBD - when you get to Heathcote, follow the signs for the
M7 - this will take you across to Liverpool, along the Cumberland
Highway through SMithfield and Wentworthville, and bring you out on
Pennant Hills Rd, taking you to Hornsby and the Newcastle Freeway.

Alternatively, stay on the M1 until you get to the M3, then follow
that until you get back on the M1 - this will take you through
Flemington and Ryde.

Seconded. Although when the Cumberland Highway reaches Old Windsor
Road you should turn left onto Old Windsor Road and drive north to the
start of the M2, which will take you to Pennant Hills Road.

It's not going to take you over the bridge, but it's also going to
help you avoid most of the areas that non-Sydneysiders find the
traffic intimidating in.

Outside of peak hour, it will save you about half an hour over going through
the city. And instead of driving through a beautiful part of one of the most
beautiful cities in the world, you will see the ugliest bits - mmmm, the M3,
Canterbury Rd, Cumberland Hwy, see them and weep at their beauty ...

I fully agree with you that the views aren't comparable. But that's
not the primary concern for some people.

I'm going from a personal experience of being in the car with a
nervous country driver, having once tried to guide my mother as she
drove from the northwest, through the city, and on to Watsons Bay on a
very quiet weekend day when she visited me once.

For a confident driver, going through the city isn't a problem (and
would also be my first choice), but my mother was suitably traumatised
that she'll never do it again if she can help it. It doesn't hurt to
present all the options and allow the OP to choose the best
alternative for them.

I believe that the best trip from Melbourne to Brisbane is actually more
inland and through Dubbo ?? or so people from Melbourne have said.

But if you need to travel through Sydney I reckon you are better off staying
on the Hume Hwy which then becomes the M5 Motorway, which then becomes
Southern Cross Drive and then becomes the Eastern Distributor and then the
Harbour Tunnel and then continue up to the Pacific Hwy exit at Chatswood and
then follow the Pacific Hwy till you turn onto the F3.
your first exit or turn after entering Sydney is actually at Chatswood on to
the Pacific Hwy.

If you follow that route you won't see a Traffic light between Albury and
Chatswood on the North side of Sydney.

The only real chance of going wrong is between Chatswood and the F3 Turnoff
which is a bit challenging.

I suggest you do this Off Peak and you will sail through Sydney, as I said
you basically stay on the same road until Chatswood.

Be aware there is a Toll on the M5 and the Eastern Distributor.

G'day Ralph,

I've driven through Sydney a few times and got lost each time I've done it.
(I guess me and big cities don't mix.) Now I simply drive around it, and not
through it. The outback and the country areas around New South Wales are far
more interesting anyway.
