Default Driving Queenstown - Christchurch

Im planning to drive Queenstown to Christchurch in April.
How long should I allow?

Can I break the the journey up into 3-4 hour driving days and where should I
stay?
Is it possible to stop off at Mount Cook on the way?

All help welcome!!

Very easy trip over two days
Most people will call into Mount Cook on the way and stay overnight
at Lake Tekapo

It is a long (6hrs driving) day not allowing for stops. Very scenic, but
very winding in parts over two low alpine passes but with long straight
stretches in between. Mt Cook makes an ideal half way stop - although it
adds about 2 hours to the journey. Hotel accommodation at Mt Cook Village
is very expensive at The Hermitage, however there are motels and a YHA. A
popular alternative is Glentanner Park which is on private farm land
immediately adjacent to the National park & about 20 Km from the Village.
You can camp or stay in cabins, with or without private bathroom & kitchen
facilities - suits all budgets. It would be roughly 4 hours (approx 330 Km)
each day if you stopped at Mt Cook.

When you return to highway 8 from the Mt Cook Rd, look for signs to the Mt
Cook Salmon farm, shortly after crossing the Lake Pukaki spillway. Follow
this very scenic road along the hydro-electricity canal & you can visit the
salmon farm & continue on to Tekapo.

Hmmm, I'd say 5 hours, but it depends on the driver & traffic I guess.

"Alpine passes"? [cough, splutter]. To a Pom maybe, to anyone else, it's a
few modest hills.

Yes -I said "low" but they are alpine and subject to snow at frequent
intervals - also winding and quite unnerving to people unused to NZ's
mountain roads without armco barriers.

I stopped at a farmstay in between the two. At the aiport at Lake Tekapo
you can book flights over Mount Cook.
