Dining in SYD
Hey folks,
I'm still planning my Sydney honeymoon. We are going to be there at the end
of April and start of May. Currently, I'm researching restaurants and would
love a few suggestions and opinions. First and foremost Tetsuya- is it worth
the hype? I noticed that it is a relais et cheateau which puts it on par
with the likes of The French Laundry (the best dining experience of my
life). This would certainly be an expensive meal, but it doesn't appear out
of line (or is it?). What about if we just want the best Sushi, any
suggestions?
One of the other places we are considering is: Guillaume at Bennelong in the
Opera house. Is this place touristy and overrated or is the food actually
good?
Finally- and I may loose some credibility here- The Summit. I have a
guidebook that says this place is kitsch in a good way and that the food
doesn't disappoint.
I think too many fancy meals will be overkill, but I'd like to have a few
good things lined up. Any suggestions would be VERY appreciated.
Oh, for what it is worth: we are staying at the Westin and then the W later
on in the week (with a trip to the Blue Mountains and Hunter Valley in
between).
Thanks in advance!

Notes from February 1998: nice atmosphere, magnificent view, very prompt
service, food is good but didn't send me around the bend, good wine list
that isn't overwhelming.
6 years might have changed a little.....

My favourite 2 in Sydey that I have tried are Seans Panorama and Catalina. Both serve excellent food. Seans is definatly more food over decor but spotless otherwise.

My only thought is that I'll need to make some reservations quite a bit in

If you can't get into one, you'll soon find another nearby with space -
In truth, in nearly 40 years of living here, I've very seldom missed out.
If it is a busy night, go early.

Yes it is, but book early as they are always full. It will be a dinner
to remember.
If you want to see the city from the top the Summit is OK, food is
what you would expect for that type of restaurant, but much better
value, decor and food than the Sydney Tower.

Re: Dining in SYD
I hated Tetsuya's. I found it overpriced, the "courses" so small I
couldn't even taste anything, the wine waiter, pushy and supercilious.
Everyone else raves.
I like Peter Doyles food. He runs Est at the Establishment Hotel.
Beautiful food.
If you want a really cheap and totally delicious cafe me, try Passion
du Fruit (spelling??) in Bourke Street, Surry Hills. Excellent food.

<much snippage here>
One place I haven't heard mentioned yet is Edna's Table, in Clarence
Street (near the corner of Market Street). While it's not exactly in a
fancy position, they do very good meals, with bush foods incorporated
- something an overseas visitor may appreciate. The quality of the
food is good, and I have yet to have a meal there I haven't enjoyed.
Dinner for two with a moderate bottle of wine runs around the $100-130
mark.

I was very disappointed to see Malaya on George had disappeared - anyone
know if the owner/operator/chef has reincarnated anywhere? It was hardly
haute cuisine or a place to impress the "new bride," but the food was
fantastic.
