Your compulsory third party (which protects against injury to third parties,
but NOT their property OR you OR your vehicle) is included in your
registration - so check how much "rego" is left on the vehicle you choose to
buy. That cost varies on renewal by the time you renew (3 months, six
months, a year) and where you garage the vehicle (rural is less expensive,
usually).
Third party property and your own property varies wildly just like any other
insurance; it can be a bit difficult for "foreigners" to get. Take a copy
of your drivers' abstract if you can.

You haven't said if you are hiring or buying the van.
If buying you can obtain a quote here at the N.R.M.A. site.
http://www.nrma.com.au/
If hiring, here as a van hire site.
http://www.apollocamper.com/
The insurance costs for hiring appear to be the same regardless of your age,
so long as you are over 21.

Then I would say skip the property coverage on your own vehicle; consider
getting third party property coverage. As I said, remaining rego is
important depending on where you're buying and how long you're staying.
Remember, all a RWC (roadworthy certificate) means is that it meets the
safety standards for that state. It does NOT mean the engine won't go BANG
in two days.
Hints - buy privately; car dealers are the same everywhere; get it checked
by a good independent (not the seller's mechanic unless you get really good
vibes, and not the manufacturer dealer e.g. Toyota, VW, etc.); ask for
receipts; and shop around. Tradingpost.com.au is a good place to start.
