Camping and budget hostels in NZ

Camping and budget hostels in NZ
Is it possible to camp in the grounds of hostels in NZ for a cheap fee? I know in Aus that there is some law preventing the hostel owners doing this but is it the same in NZ?

Certain hostels have a back yard where you can pitch a tent.
