I'm planning a trip to Australia in September for 14-16 days. Plan on
spending time in Sydney, Adelaide and looking for a good beach
destination to spend 4-5 days. Can anyone recommend area and/or
places to stay?

September is only early Spring - still a bit cool for beaches down south -
suggest you head for QLD - eg Sunshine Coast or further north still.

Well, it depends. Do you want to lie in the sun, or swim, or surf,
or?? The "best beach" depends on what you want from a beach. As others
have said, the water is a bit cool in September in the southern states
- though perhaps not if you're from somewhere really cold!
The Whitsunday Islands (a bit north of Mackay) are usually great at
that time of year, but there is no surf inside the Great Barrier Reef
and often the beaches are coral or shell, not sand, so as I said
above, it depends on what you want from a beach.
