Default Backpacker / Hostel Discount Cards (?)

I'm going over to Australia in a couple weeks to backpack around, find
random jobs, stay in hostels, see the countryside and visit my girlfriend
(with limited funds)... I keep reading about these discount cards like the
HI card or the VIP and YHA cards, etc., etc. Are these worth getting?
Which one is best?

thanks
Adam

I've used a VIP card before. You generally get a $1 off a night in most
hostels with it. You also get reductions on tickets. In my case the price
I got off my Greyhound bus pass paid for the card.

Same here. As I was taking the Indian Pacific, the $100+ I saved (on one
trip
only) more than offset the $35 (approx) the card cost. Recommended!

Yes VIP card definitely, Carry it with you at all times, ask for discounts
at attractions, Rail and Coach trips even cafes etc - even if they don't
show the VIP sign. I got discount my Uluru flight and discounts at hostels
that didn't appear to be members.
