Default in Australia or New Zealand from Dec. to June: advices need! :)

Hi all :)
Not sure if my destination for my first big trip will be Australia or
New Zealand.. it depends also upon you.

First of all: i'm not a "real" surfer.
I have only a board (long) and gave a try a couple of times (no big
waves here in Italy during summer), but I need a journey (for my
spirit) and I need to surf waves (for my spirit too): don't ask me why,
I know it's so :)

I need a destination where I can find:
. waves almost time (not important if they are not so big);
- job (i like working for good people, it's not important what job
but.. for/with good people);
- not to much silly tourists (like me? :) or at least a place where I
can also find other kinds of pepole for getting in touch with "real"
life.

Sorry, I know there won't be a perferct place that you can tell me
about by my list, but I just need advices... you know, it's a big step
    :)

I can also plane to travel through Australia, but will I find a job
everywhere?
It's has not to necessarily be a full time job (if i can pay my
"holidays" it already would be a great thing).

I really can't choose right now.. too much option.. east, west, north,
south coast.. maybe it could depend upon climate maybe upon
chance/destiny :)

Please help me if you can.

Have a nice surf,
Dany :)

P.S.
I would like to move here forever if I could have the chance... please
let me know if you know any employer who could help me. Thanks so much.

Australia, hands down. NZ is nice, but its much smaller than Australia, and
with 6 months you have enough time to see a big country. NZ is also cold in
winter - in Australia you can go up north when it gets cold. Australia also
has more and better surfing spots.

If you are under 30 you can legally work in Australia, and part time work is
easy to find (and comparaitively well paid).

Start at Melbourne or Sydney and work your way up north as it gets cooler.
The west coast is also great (eg start at Perth and go north), but far fewer
people and not as much to see (its mostly desert). You could do both, but
Sydney/Perth return is further (and costs more) than Sydney/NZ return.

If you want to do both Australia and NZ, start in NZ while its still summer
and then go north in Australia as winter approaches.

Only if you have a visa that allows it, eg a Working Holiday Visa. You cannot work on a tourist visa.

?!
Only if you are from a country with reciprocal arrangements and go through
the procedure to acquire the right papers etc.

6 months is a good length of time. can easily do NZ as a side-trip, if you
keep an eye on the online airfares, there's often specials to NZ that pop up
(regularly!).

A surfing safari... I'd start with Hostels in surfing areas (and starting in
December, there'll be plenty of choice). Will probably hook up with
like-minded people and then an itinerary can develop from there.
I did that in Canada, skiing. Met heaps of nice people, and the second time
I did it, I had a car, which made everything more easy, more fun, and I had
lots of friends (cars have that effect on hostellers).

Byron Bay and Noosa Heads are both excellent places to learn how to surf. In
both places nice even swells wrap around a headland into a calm bay creating
a near perfect wave for beginners. But, everyone who has the slightest
interest in surfing knows this and both places are crowded during summer.
Expect 4 or 5 other surfers on each wave. But when you get there you'll
realise why everyone is there - the surf is just so good!

On the plus side of your trip you shouldn't have much trouble getting a job
in either town. Australia is in a boom, workers in almost all industries are
needed. You'll be welcomed with open arms. So do us a favour and get over
here ASAP!
