Any tsunami damage?
Ok, it may sound stupid but did any of the waves or tremors from the
quake get towards Oz or NZ at all?

Some friends in WA reported a "high tide" when it should have been a low
tide - but little damage - some cars flooded in a beach car park. The very
remote nature of the North West coast of WA and the low population has
probably meant a minimal impact. We were lucky.
NZ is in the Pacific Ocean not the Indian Ocean so is unaffected by the
waves - but no doubt is suffering the angst of lost friends in the affected
areas - much the same as every other country I suspect.

We had tidal surges in Bunbury (south of Perth) on Monday and from what I
read it left a couple of yachts stranded and one boat washed on to some
rocks plus a 2 metre tidal range in our Inner Harbour that was moving in and
out of the harbour every 30 minutes (normal tide range is usually 40 to 70cm
.. once or twice a day). There was also a 30cm difference in water depth
either side of the storm gates in the Leschenault Inlet.

The wave went around Australia taking a total of some 17 hours to
reach NZ.
WELLINGTON, Dec. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- The tsunami which wrecked havoc on
coastlines throughout Asia reached New Zealand, 17 hours after it was
triggered by a massive earthquake in the Indian Ocean, the National
Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) said Tuesday.
Surges of between 10 cm and 30 cm were recorded between 7 a.m. to 12
p.m. (NZ time) Monday morning at tidal gauges at New Plymouth of the
North Island, Bluff and Jackson Bay, 44 km southwest of Haast on west
coast of the South Island, NIWA science leader of natural hazards Rob
Bell told New Zealand Press Association.
The earthquake - the most powerful in 40 years - hit at about 2p.m.
(NZ time) off the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra and
caused tidal waves that slammed into coastlines across Asia killing
tens of thousands of people in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, India, Malaysia,
Thailand and the Maldives.
The tsunami had to "bend" around Australia and by the time it reached
New Zealand, 8,000 km from its epicenter, it had dissipated, Bell
said.

Hmmm - when a container ship passes they produce larger bow waves than
that. Wonder how they distinguish between "waves" and "waves".
