hi there

we are going to oz on 15th may for 3 weeks

we want to go from london on the 15th may to cairns stay there till the 21st
may then fly to melbourne, stay in melbourne for the duration and fly from
melbourne on the 5th june to london. any recomendations for airlines, web
sites etc.

i'm assuming you're after domestic flights from cairns to melbourne?
just thinking about it, i'm so clouded with the main competing companies
that i can't remember any other domestic carriers other than virgin blue
and qantas. www.virginblue.com.au and www.qantas.com.au
if you're interested in staying a bit longer in cairns, you may be able
to get cheaper from www.jetstar.com (spin off of qantas, starts flying
25th may)
there's a lot to do around cairns and townsville, such as hinchinbrook
island, magnetic island, as well as the barrier reef and rainforests.
perhaps you can look at travelling between cairns and townsville and
leaving from townsville a few days later if you wanna make the jetstar
start date? (having said that of course, $40 difference in tickets may
not mean much to you having spent however much on tickets and
accomodation getting here, but since i'm only thinking about what I'D
do....)

Most UK based websites to Australia are not ideal for planning and getting
detailed flight information unless you want simple return flights to/from
the same city - they tend to rely on you phoning them. Some examples are

http://www.travelbag.co.uk

Not many Airlines fly into Cairns the ones I recommend are Japan Airlines,
Qantas (Australian), British Airways, Cathay Pacific.
