Air NZ - price difference
Hi guys
I must let you know about this..
I had vaguely enquired about the price of a one-way ticket Dunedin-
Wellington (a flight I HAVE to take for many reasons) from friends in NZ
and they told me it should be relatively cheap. I tried booking a ticket
at airnewzealand.co.uk and it cost £127. Hm, I thought, let's try
airnewzealand.co.nz. It cost NZ$133. I made a booking with my UK credit
card, gave my UK phone number as contact and received and e-ticket,
confirmation, the works.
Given that £=2.3NZ$ this is like a 240% mark-up if you buy from the UK
using the local UK site rather than the New Zealand site.

That's the "Economy" fare price. There is a full refund if you cancel
before departure.

The airnewzealand.co.nz site lists several different fare classes.

That is the "Smart Saver" fare price.
(The "Flexi Saver" and "Fully Flexi" fares are higher than that.)
There is no refund if you cancel before departure, and hefty charges
(around half the ticket price IIRC) to change the booking. See

Thank you Ralph, I am fully aware of this :-) But I could see the
different classes ONLY from the .nz website. The .uk website gave me no
choice and it chose the most expensive class although there were other
available. And the difference is not small; it's huge.
By all means check yourself and try to book a flight Dunedin-Wellington
for next March. Don't worry, you'll be quote the price well before they
ask for any personal details.

I booked flights from Auckland - Tauranga thru' the NZ wesite after
registering with them. I even asked if I could do this even although I lived
in the UK. The Air NZ guy told me to try it but did say normally the flights
were for residents only. I booked for 3 adults and 1 child. The same night I
got a call from AirNZ asking the age of the child, so they knew where I
lived. It saved me a fortune

I did check the .uk website, and as you say only the full Economy fare
was listed.
The difference is large, but the price is reflected in how draconian
are the conditions.
Having said that, I can only see one specifically international related
condition for the cheaper fares on the .nz website The cheaper fares
are not valid in combination with international travel. (Presumably it
would be your loss if you missed an international flight connection).
Some years ago I tried to buy a US-Netherlands-US cheap fare (on a
different airline) in Auckland, only to be told by the airline's
Auckland office that, not only could they not sell me the fare but
they also could not admit to me that this fare existed.

I agree with you John, it is outrageous what some of these airlines get away
with. I had the same problem in Japan. Trying to book off websites or
through agents in Australia, nothing was mentioned of disocunted domestic
fares. Yet if you buy in Japan, using an Aussie credit card and Australian
contact telephonme number etc the price was less than half price
