Default Advice needed on Great Barrier Reef Trips

Hi,

I would very much appreciate some advice in selecting a reasonably priced
trip to the Great Barrier Reef during the month of August. I understand
there are several companies which operate out of Port Douglas and Cairns.

Any recommendations will certainly help.

Thanks.

How old are you? What do you want to do there? Snorkeling, diving,
drinking, fishing, sun baking?
Each provider is specialized differently.

Tell us more and we can give you suggestions.

Cheers
Gerhard

We are a family of three with 2 of us interested in snorkeling while the
other would be happy to be on land but is being taken on the trip for the
fun of it and is hoping not to get sea sick! We are looking for a day trip
which is informative and takes in a bit of snorkeling and if possible
underwater viewing.

Thanks again.

Hi Irfan,

Try www.divedownunder.com
If you like sailing on top what you asked for- that's the choice.
Good food, lot's of drinks ;-) , sailing, snorkeling, Marine Biologist
guided snorkeling, Glass bottom boat, small group- what else do you
want?
They pick you up anywhere in the Cairns area.
Prices are on their website.

Cheers

Also try http://www.downunderdive.com.au/ (different from Dive Down Under!)

Went on their Osprey V day trip. Paid about $125 in April for day trip,
snorkelling and scuba equipment for an intro dive, lunch, and semisubmersible
trip. Free (cheap boxed) wine on the way back.

Mind you that was a backpacker's price, but ask around the many hostels to see
if they'll give you a similar price.

Also paid another $80 for a 10 minute helicopter flight, definitely worth it to
see the reef from above (if it's a clear, sunny day).

A few bits of advice:

if you can snorkel or dive, skip the semisubmersible. The views I got from
inside were murky at best, even though we got the best underwater conditions in
weeks (sunny, flat calm, no wind, underwater visibility 15-20 metres). The sub
can't get close enough for clear views, and I wasted half an hour on it,
breathing engine fumes no less, when i could've been snorkelling instead.

Also, if you have a few days in Cairns, it's best not to book these trips more
than a day in advance since you can't know what the weather'll be like. I waited
half a week before I felt conditions were ideal.

Instead of going to Cairns or Port Douglas, you could also consider
trips out of Airlie Beach on the Whitsunday Coast. Some of them cater
very well for all age groups and activity levels.
