Hi,
I hope somebody who knows (or lives in) Adelaide can offer a suggestion. I
will be in Adelaide shortly for about 6 days staying at the Hyatt (sounds
nice!). I have never been there before and am wondering should I rent a
car to get out and about while I am there(perhaps sightseeing trips outside
the city are plentiful) or is it really not worth it (ie maybe walking the
city will totally consume 6 days and I will see everything I need to on my
first visit).
I am asking before I go as I generally find I can get a far better car
rental deal in advance than when arrive. I normally like to rent a car
unless the city is car unfriendly (eg NYC or London) but it can be end up
being a liability if parking charges etc. are high and to start with the
Hyatt website only mentions valet parking!
Regards to all.

We were just there for a long weekend and only used public transport,
or walked - which was very pleasant.
If you do any day tours they will pick you up at the hotel and return
you at the end of the day, and this is certainly a good way to see
either the Barossa Valley (wine tour) or to Kangaroo Island.
For day use, the public transport offers a $6.00 DAY ticket which
includes all the bus, train and tram service in the city area. We had
a great day using this, went to Port Adelaide on Sunday for the
markets, the tram to Glenelg and multiple buses. Great value.
The city centre is quite walkable, Rundle Street Mall is good
shopping, and all the musesums and Festival Hall plus Casino are one
block away.
I think you can do it quite easily without a car.

have been in adelaide twice
rent a car, make a trip to the wineries, or better: rent a 4wd and visit the
flinders range!
alternative if You don not want to rent a car and want to see the real
wildlife: book a trip to kangeroo island
depends of what you really like, more info? just ask.

Thanks to Tom, Max and Jan for responding. I guess I'll skip renting in
advance, see how it goes with public transport and tours and maybe rent for
a day or two exploring outside the city.
