I can't tell you about availability, but I can tell you that if nothing
acceptable is available in the Melbourne CBD, you could always aim for
suburban accomodation. The MCG is easily accessible by train from many
suburbs in the east, north east and southern suburbs, which should give you
plenty of options. It is fairly accessible (though not as easily, involves
changing trains) from the western suburbs and places in the west like
Geelong.

The metro train map is available here:

The MCG is between Jolimont and Richmond Stations, and all stations on these
lines are served reasonably frequently (every 15 minutes daytime, 20 mins
weekends, 20-30 mins evenings) with extra services running in rush hour and
for the football. The farthest reaches of the network are about an hour from
Richmond/Jolimont and the city loop. Bear in mind if you aim for the
suburbs, make sure it's near a station, as feeder bus services are generally
poor, and you may wish to avoid a long walk.

Default Accommodation in Melbourne for the GF

I'm hoping to see Port Adelaide win this year's Grand Final. Does anyone
have any experience in trying to get accommodation voor the Friday and
Saturday nights? I know that many places put in a hefty increase for
those nights, but what about availability? It's very possible that two
non-Melbourne clubs will be contesting the GF, which will make
accommodation harder to find.

Regards

Joseph

Pushed the post button and then realised I hadn't added my second question.
What's the availability of accommodation in places like Geelong? I believe
that Ballarat became a temporary suburb of Adelaide when the Crows reached
the GF, but does that also happen in Geelong? I was thinking I could hit a
motel in Geelong and take the train into the city.

The suburban option is the one I'm leaning towards. Presumably the further from
the CBD, the less the demand.

The links were pretty useful as was your own site. Many thanks.
