Trial therapy: Moxabustion massage

Prev. story | Next story
A rolled herb is lit and held on the meridians that run down the spine

By Suzanne Harrison

What is it?
A 90-minute treatment that combines an ancient Chinese practice of
moxabustion (15 minutes), a deep-tissue body massage and a half-hour facial.

What is moxabustion?
A rolled herb (moxa is the dried leaves of mugwort) is lit and held on
the meridians (energy pathways of traditional Chinese medicine) that run
down the spine. This is followed by an acupressure massage, which is
said to promote self-healing. The moxa is said to stimulate acupuncture
points.

How does it feel?
While you're lying down, the therapist feels for the acupressure points
on your back and then places lit moxa on those areas. She told me to
indicate when the heat became too much to bear and this varied depending
on the area. Points where there's an internal problem are less capable
of withstanding the heat, indicating what needs to be worked on during
the massage. It's not an unpleasant sensation, but by the time she
reached the base of my spine I was pleased to be moving on to the
massage. The longer you can bear the heat, the more beneficial it's said
to be. The moxa initially smells a little pungent, like a fire after
it's been lit, but this odour soon goes away.

What about the massage?
This is the best part. The therapist uses just the right amount of
pressure on stiff areas such as the lower back and shoulders. The
massage is said to alleviate headaches, stress, period pains and
insomnia. By the end of the roughly 45-minute massage, I was almost
asleep. The facial combines deep cleansing, a peel, mask and a head massage.

What wasn't so good?
The moxa was an interesting treatment for those curious about the
benefits of traditional Chinese medicine, but half-way through, I felt
I'd had enough. Still, the combination of all three treatments was a
real tension-buster and provided relief for my stiff shoulders.
?P>Where is it available?
At Body Conscious in Central, a day spa that specialises in body work
(Thai massage, shiatsu and the like). The spa also does facials, hand
and foot treatments and ear candling. The place has wide, comfortable
treatment beds, is modern and quiet, and prides itself on using only
experienced masseurs.

How much did the treatment cost and where is the spa?
It's $720 at Body Conscious, ?6/F the Centrium, 60 Wyndham St, Central.
