Default Rather silly questions about shopping in Thailand...

Hi all,

My niece collects Cabbage Patch dolls (and I have a couple myself!) and I
wanted to get her one of the new ones. There are a few Asian dolls on the
market here in Oz, but I thought it would be a nice gift to be able to get
her an Asian one in Asia when I am in Thailand soon. So... I know most
people wouldn't notice, but I was hoping someone may have spotted them in
Thailand recently? I've tried emailing Robinson, Big C and Tesco-Lotus, no
reply from any.

Thanks,
Mel

I don't recall seeing them anywhere in BKK or Phuket. Not that I was really looking for them, but I think they would be hard to find there.

Thanks, I suspected they might be difficult to find, but I'm pretty sure
they were available there at some points... perhaps I'll just get one here
and tell her it's from Thailand!

That may be too far from the truth. Chances are that even if its not
actually made in Thailand, it probably originated in a factory in a
nearby country.

They used to be made in China, don't know where they are made now. Since
she's only 6, by the time she realises I didn't buy it here she might be old
enough to not care!

You could try Mahboonkrong (MBK). It is a 5 level shopping centre full of all sorts of everything. Just ask your hotel where it is located. You can get the sky train there if you are staying in BKK. It is right near Siam Square. Can't remember the road name, but you will be able to locate it on a BKK map on the internet.

MBK is at the corner of Phloen Chit (aka Rama I) and Phaya Thai. The food
center near the top floor is also a great way to sample lots of Thai food in
air-conditioned comfort.

I love MBK! I should have told you that I have been to Thailand many times
before, just never looking for Cabbage Patch dolls! I guess if they don't
have them at MBK they probably don't have them anywhere.

Siam works too - both stations are connected to the MBK Centre by overhead
walkway, and the distance isn't much different.

Which reminds me, what is the point of the National Stadium stop? It's
basically across the street from Siam.

I have a 6 year old daughter and when we were in Thailand in the July school
hols (we're from Sydney) we spent a fair bit of time browsing department
stores, partly to get out of the heat and partly for the fun of shopping.
We went to lots of toy areas but I don't recall seeing any Cabbage Patch
dolls. There were all the usual western suspects - Barbie, baby born etc.
There were some other things that I hadn't seen here - dolls house furniture
was wonderful and so was Lego. We also got some great kids books, with
stories based in Thailand (Koko the Monkey by Janice Sanitkarn is the one I
remember best - he goes to all the landmarks in Bangkok, which is a great
memory of our trips there). Found some great jigsaws too - I did the one of
Wat Arun at the weekend and wished I was going back to Thailand very soon.
I'm sure you'll find something else for your niece that will be a perfect
souvenir of Thailand.

Enjoy your trip.

They probably needed to extend the Silom line out clear of Siam
station just so as to have space to manoeuvre the trains onto the
parallel track for the return journey to Saphan Taksin. Having done
that, they probably thought why not put another station at the end of
that 'tail' line. I agree, it does seem a bit unnecessary, and few
people seem to actually use it.

Thanks for the reply, Viviane. My poor family have so much Thai stuff from
my other four trips, so your ideas sound good. My boyfriend is already
looking forward to the Lego (do boys ever grow out of Lego?!)

You could also try Chatuchak Weekend markets.
