Default south africa pictures

Hi everyone,

I got back from a fantastic holiday in SA a few weeks ago and am just
reminising. it seems like there are a lot of knowledgeable people in this
group, so perhaps someone can identify this for me:

http://www.tcwcom.co.uk/andrew/me/tr...s/dscf0240.jpg

It's the only picture I have where I don't know what it is I'm looking at.
Fantastic camoflage though. Anyone interested in photos from the rest of
the trip look here:

http://www.tcwcom.co.uk/andrew/me/travel/sa02

They're hardly as adventurous as Sadie's seem to be, though they seem to
have disappeared from Webshots so I hope they come back on a different
server soon.

Cheers,

Loved your photos. I was in South Africa in 1998 and stupidly sat on my camera
on the second day, and got very few pictures as a result. Enjoyed seeing all
your animal shots I missed with broken camera.Great web page!
My African photos are back on line for public viewing temporarily. Hope you
enjoy them.

It looks like a cicada. You may have heard, at the hottest hours of
the day, an insect producing a high pitch whining sound lasting for a
few minutes - that's what you have here. They don't bite.

Spot on - it *was* making a wailing noise. That's what attracted my
attention.

Well done that man.

In Afrikaans it's called a "sonbesie". A lot of them together create an
unearthly racket!

Well done for having spotted and photographed one, they're rather elusive
and keep quiet when you aproach.

This looks like the common cicada. They are the guys that are mostly
resposible for the high pitched buzz that you hear in the bush. It's
that noise that is at first irritating, then deafening, and after time
becomes the ambient noise you don't even notice anymore.

They're incredibly hardy, and live almost anywhere. I don't know how
many different species there are.

Regards,

Marc - Johannesburg.
