I CAN'T WAIT 2 YEARS!!!!
Hello,
I think I'm hooked. I just got back and I'm planning my next trip. I
decided I can't wait 2 more years. I'm single, very little
responsibilities ie. no children. I do have pets, five to be exact. I
hate my job, no I shouldn't say that, I hate the politics at my job. I
really don't have any hobbies, so I decided I do NOW! Travel! I
enjoyed the research, the planning, the anticipation of going. Like I
said I think I'm hooked. If I can get beyond the flying part of
traveling.
Anyways, I was web searching and I always get caught up in the websites
and get frustrated cause I never end up with Prices, and I spend so much
time in one site. So I e-mailed all of the "As" and "Bs" safari
companies that were listed with KATO (kenya association of tour
operators) Most of which also does the TZ circuits. I'll see how far I
get. I'll just start my own personal filing cabinet with safari
brochures. I'm somewhat compulsive when I'm determined to do something.
I'm interested in TZ. this time, maybe sometime in October. Serengeti
and the Crater. I'll plan for October though settle for Jan/Feb 2004.
I need to check more into the best time for the migration without
hitting the peak season, or for sure I won't be able to afford to go in
October.

AFAIR, the migration will be gettoing back to the Serengeti from late
October - early November. What you have to watch out for is the short rains,
which *should* start in November. Nothing is certain with the rains!
The peak price time (even for Tz though the migration is in the Mara then)
is July-September (the law of supply and demand), sadly for me.
Jan/Feb is even cheaper and has the added attraction that that's when most
of the young wildebeest and zebra are born. However, I remember reading a
poster here (Felicia?) saying that many people find it upsetting to visit
then because of course the predators are closely following the pregnant
mothers, and picking off the calves/foals.
Good luck with your research, and safari njema!

In fact, if you can wait till May 2004, or even June, you can get
low-season lodge rates
and airfares. And you would definitely intersect the migration in the
Serengeti.
Demand from Europe (it's cold there) in the winter months (Jan/Feb)
keeps lodge rates
at high season levels - approx. $50US per person per night higher than the
low season rates.
What should a TZ safari cost? I'm providing 2 ladies with a private
safari for 6 nights
out of Arusha at the Serena lodges with all expenses included in June
(low season)
for $ 1800 p.p. - includes park fees, their own guide & vehicle, luxury
lodges,
and a flight from the Serengeti back to Arusha and transfer to Kilimanjaro
airport on their last day. They're climbing Kilimanjaro with another
operator
before the safari, and arranged their own international air.
There are cheaper (and more costly) safaris of comparable length, but you
could use that as a benchmark. Additional nights should cost about $200
- $ 250 p.p.,
depending on where you spend them.

Well, this is really Off-topic, but not entirely off-thread.
D. got a phone call from a former pupil this afternoon.
We haven't seen her much recently, we were at her wedding a couple of years
back, then she phoned last year to tell us she was going to Kenya in
November '02.
Anyway, they had started planning their next safari (this time they just had
a short one out of Mombasa): then she discovered she was pregnant, and she's
positive she conceived in Kenya (doctors had told her she couldn't conceive
after serious illnesses in her teenage years, so she's only just found out,
no-one having considered the possibility until this week!).
Anyway, now she has mixed feelings, as she knows it will be many years
before she can visit Africa again, though surprised and delighted about the
baby.
Africa 'bites' in more ways than one!

I guess it has to be a very crucial point now for her and her doctor to
re-check about the malaria precautions she used when being in Kenya in
November 2002! I don't know about Malarone in this context, but I know
about Lariam: the coincidence of taking Lariam and getting pregnant CAN
be very, very dangerous for the health of the embryo. No reason to
totally panic, I hope, but she should definitely check about this
question.

Why should she stay out of Africa now that she is pregnant?I have a petite
German wife, we have 5 chilren and has travelled all over Southern Africa
many times. Even babies loves Africa! Just yesterday we meet folk from the
Jersey Island with a little boy who is just starting to walk - and does he
enjoy the sand and dust and open spaces!

Money!
Just like me, she can't do both.
I made my choice, she thought the choice had been made for her!

You didn't get the point, Koos. The point is: if she took Lariam back in
November 2002 during her stay in Kenya AND if she conceived during that
time, then she should let her doctor know about this, because those
Lariam pills taken in November 2002 could already have done serious harm
to the embryo. There was a warning by the company behind Lariam
(Hoffmann - La Roche AG) on the package insert years ago, advising their
female customers to seriously consider abortion in the case of getting
pregnant while taking Lariam!

Under the circumstances, I *hope* the girl was taking Malarone, but I doubt
it.
It's almost certain that her GP would be getting advice from Ruchhill same
as mine, and the advice last year was to stick with Lariam, and since there
apparently wasn't a conception issue....
:-(
She'll probably be seeing the same GP, who will advise.
There's no way I'd be the bearer of possibly bad tidings.
