Emigrate to South Africa?
Are you a South African that has left South Africa and is considering returning home? Or are you someone looking for a better standard of living and thinking about moving to South Africa.
My husband and I are fortunate to have residency for both the UK and Australia, but because we both grew up in Africa (Kenya and South Africa) we can't help but feel that South Africa is home despite all its "problems".
Is there anyone out there that has already made the move (back) to South Africa? How has it been? Is there anyone out there like us, that are considering the move but are unsure? What are your thoughts/doubts?
It would be great to hear your views, concerns, etc.

Hi, interesting to read your post. I wonder where in Kenya you both grew up? We
haven`t been to South Africa but lived in Kenya for a few years. Our son went to
school there but he`s been living in NZ for six years now. Best wishes, Pat

Hi, interesting to read your post. I wonder where in Kenya you both grew up? We
haven`t been to South Africa but lived in Kenya for a few years. Our son went to

I was born and grew up in Kenya, we first lived in Machakos and then later moved to Karen. My schooling was at Hillcrest where my father was the headmaster. We left there in 1989 when my parents decided to move back to the UK. My husband is from South Africa, he went on a 6 month Contiki holiday to Europe back in 1993 and hasn't returned to live in South Africa since. Unlike most South Africans he wasn't "leaving" South Africa, but ultimately that is what has happened.
We are at present confused as to where to live, we know that we do not want to spend the rest of our years in the UK, but due to family and friends we are unsure which country to pick - Australia/South Africa?? Nowadays we have far too many choices.

but what conditoins would we face ? Sorry to be controvertial but white does'nt fit
anymore thats why all the SA's I meet are so bitter.

If you are talking to white South Africans who have emigrated, you will get a biassed
answer, since they decided to leave. The white South Africans who are quite happy and
committed to living here are unlikely to be in your sample.

I have a SA wife, are are considering moving down, if we get proper jobs. Her family
however all warn us. Their belief that Europe is the last of opportuntes, may
influence their advice.

Hi I am from Canada and was working in South Africa for 1 year last year. I was
with VSO Canada teaching computers. I really loved it down there. I lived in
Nelsprut in Mpumalanga province and spent lots of time in the bush. one of my fav
places were Uzumbe around Durban. There was not much to do there just relax and
chill on the beach.

Are you a South African? How long did you live in South Africa, or any other African country for that matter?
Plunging currency... it seems to have levelled out for the time being at 1 British Pound = 16.52859 South African Rand, prior to the massive drop at the end of 2001, the Rand was stable at around 10-12 Rands to the pound for several years. If it were "plunging" the Rand would never have recovered from 20 Rand to 16 Rand to the Pound.
Rampant AIDS... yes unfortunately this is the case, and without education, funding, etc it will unfortunately remain this way.
Crime is high, and yes they are targeting some affluent areas, but you'll find that majority of the crime occurs in and around the townships. By saying "whites attacked and killed" you are in fact wrong, your statement should say "people of all races are being attacked and in some cases killed"! But then isn't this the case worldwide?
Finally, I wasn't asking about Zimbabwe, my thread is about South Africa or to be more precise, the Republic of South Africa, which won't necessarily go the same way as many other Africa countries - for starters the president can only be in office for a maximum of 2 terms, therefore preventing a dictatorship as in Zimbabwe and Kenya.
