Capetown
I am off to Capetown on business for a month at the end of April. Can
anyone recommend things to do at weekends? And is it safe?

Re: Capetown
Cape Town is a very popular tourist destination, which I find perfectly
safe, with attractions such as:
1. Table Mountain - Take the cable car to summit and hike on the top.
2. Hike up Table Mountain on one of the popluar routes (be sure you
understand the mountain safety issues before starting). GET A MAP
3. Visit Cape Point, which is a conservation area
4. Visit Kirstenbosch gardens with it's diversity of unique Cape Flora
5. Tour the winelands our at Stellenbosch and Franshoek
6. Visit Robben Island where Nelson Mandela and others were imprisioned
7. Drive around the peninsula visiting Boulders penguin colony, near Simon's
Town
8. Beach at Clifton
9. Eat out at Camp's Bay, the Waterfront or in the City
10. Party somewhere in Somerset Road area
etc.
By end of April, summer will be at an end, so the weather may be
unpredictable, temperatire wise.
Enjoy your trip.

When I was there (well, in Camps Bay) last Easter, I found it to be
very safe. Obvious places to take in would be Table Mountain, the
Waterfront, Robben Island, Kirstenboch Gardens and perhaps a trip to
Cape Point, Boulder Bay or the winelands...
Enjoy your trip

Re: Capetown
by all means take the ferry at the V&A waterfront to Robbin Island where
Mandela was imprisoned. It is a 35 min ferry ride and a 2 1/2 hr tour ( ours
was by a former political prisoner).

My husband and I have recently returned from a two month trip to Cape Town (he was learning to fly which, by the way, is very economical - much cheaper than doing it in the UK even factoring in the flight accommodation etc.) any way back to business. We were concerned about safety as there seems to be a lot of talk about crime levels, we found it extremely safe. I spent a lot of time travelling around on my own and never felt threatened even in areas which wre said to be unsafe.
My husband is also a cyclist and having takne a bike with him he did a lot of cycling around the area and he said he felt much safer than cycling in UK!
I agree with all the recommendations made by earlier posts, also it's worth driving up the much neglected west coast to Saldhana. We spent an idyllic mid week day on an almost deserted beach with a fairly ramshackle beach bar providing welcome refreshment. Also, visit Delta 200 at Cape Town Airport and take an hour's flight around the coast.
The only other thing I regret NOT doing was a township tour. We are planning a return trip and this is top of our list, If you're interested I have contact details of an individual who lives in one of the townships and who does guided tours. It is not adviseable to go without a guide.
I'm very envious of your going there -enjoy!!

Good to hear positive feedback!

The West Coast is indeed "neglected" even though it's such a beautiful
region. And in August/September there are the wild flowers which
simply cannot be described in words.

A tour to a township also puts much-needed tourism money where it's
needed the most. It's heart-breaking to see the conditions under which
many people have to live.
You haven't really seen ALL of South Africa if you haven't been to a
township.
