Ah, the mystery is revealed. We have one of these living next door. I don't know why she needs the mobile phone; I'm sure she can be heard throughout Portugal.

Same here in Abruzzo. They love their mobile phones so perhaps the shouting is a cry for others to notice their phones or prove what a wonderful, busy life they have? Mind you when there's a domestic argument the whole valley can hear!

My Portuguese neighbour also talks loudly without her phone, ie when chatting with another neighbour. It sounds like she is having an argument but they are best friends. She is not deaf because she talks to my wife and I with reasonable volume.
