Basically, any restaurant on the east side of the river is good. There are very good 'rustic' restaurants and good 'haut cuisine' restaurants too. It depends on your taste. Have a wander around the lanes and see what takes your fancy.
Personally I would avoid the ones on the riverside up by Barclays bank. They tend to be overpriced and not very good - and I can't stand the way they have 'touts' trying to drag you in. Any restaurant that has to do that can't be that good IMHO.
There are also many good restaurants on the outskirts of Tavira that are well worth travelling to.

The "hole in the wall" or "tin shacks" are our favourites.

I think it is called Inacios,
If you walk from the bishops square towards the opposite side of the river to the bus station. You pass a couple of cafes and a bicycle shop then there is a gap where you can see the river, and there it is, It looks like a bar!
And they only speak Portuguese.
friendly and helpful.
I usually have either costeletos, or Bife de peru grilled.
Lunch only Monday to Friday
