TV Advice

I know very little about how to sort out the TV in Portugal - I am not worried about having lots of special gadgets/effects - just a few channels in English. I know it will have been dealt with on here before and on the Ayamonte thread but I can't find it so I thought I would ask again. I will need to get a TV sorted this summer in the new place I have bought. I understand that a satellite dish is needed and a Sky Box/Freeview?. Does the Sky Box need to be bought in Portugal and does it need a card and a contract? It has been suggested I buy one in the UK and bring it over as no doubt it is much cheaper. Will I need any special leads if I buy it here in the UK? Is an ordinary Freeview Box OK?

Thanks

You might also like to consider the Humax boxes as they have a built-in hard drive to record onto. Best to buy in UK and bring them over as they are almost twice the price here.

What about fitting the dish. Is it something you can do yourself or will you be getting a fitter to do it for you. If it's the latter you could probably shop around and find someone who will do the package for you.

We get Meo through Portugal Telecom - the bulk of the channels are in English with Portuguese subtitles (which helps in learning the language) and you get the Fox and AXN channels which are much the same as the Sky channels in the UK. There is also BBC Entertainment should you want it.

We also have Meo and the advantage is that for less than we were previously paid for phone and internet separately we now have both and cable TV with a Meo box with a Hard Drive.

We are not moving permanently and don't need the phone or internet - really just a cheap solution that provides some English channels. Not keen on taking on a Portuguese contract but thanks for the thought.

In that case: dish pointed right way + Freesat box - potentially expensive to start with but no ongoing cost.
