Default Travel Insurance

Hi all,
We are an Australian couple unable to get home due to the virus. We are currently in the the UK and do have UK passports as well as Australian.
We are escaping the UK for winter and moving to the Algarve on 15 Nov for as long as we are allowed or until we can get home.
My assumption is we can stay in Portugal fine until 31Dec 2020 then we will only be allowed a further 90 days then have to leave the EU? Is this correct?
We are booked into a hotel in Albufeira for a week and hope to find a T1 or T2 place to stay for the rest of our stay in the Algarve area.

Any suggestions on what we should do for travel/medical insurance? We have NHS numbers and EHICs. We have no onward flights booked at this stage as we dont know where and when we are going. Should i just get it for the whole time I'm there, which is hard as I dont know how long we will be there? Or just for the first week?

Any help for us lost souls would be great thanks!

Cheers!

Mark and Elle

Last week a travel agent in uk told me that medical insurance to Portugal was stopped as you are traveling against the Governments advice, ie at your own risk.
Try directly eg Allianz insurance!

Why can't you fly back to Australia if you are Australian citizens? (which in another post you say you are)

Travel into Australia

Australia’s borders are closed. The only people who can travel to Australia are:
  • Australian citizens
  • residents
  • immediate family members
  • travellers who have been in New Zealand for the previous 14 days.

Try these people : https://europesuretravelinsurance.com/ We use them and get a very reasonable rate for annual insurance covering individual trips of 32 days .

Travel insurance is usually only issued in your home country - especially if it covers medical costs.
This couple are Australian and only visiting the UK.
