Default Supermarket Covid tests

Last week I saw tests for a couple of euros.
What would these be used for? - are they just for personal reassurance, or are they accepted officialy for some purposes?

I saw them in the shops in Italy. Also, loads of pharmacies had temporary testing facilities outside of them. I suppose the logic is that extensive testing identifies problems sooner.

When going to a restaurant and dining inside the self-test is accepted as long as it is done at the door and verified by staff . Obviously also useful for personal reassurance
