I've been told you don't need one. Any experiences anyone?

We also sold without a solicitor. Buying is a different matter.
Notary will check all the details. You might find you need a translater, if you're not fluent in Portuguese.

The notary we had translated but I suppose that’s an individual thing.

Using a slocitor when buying real estate is a British thing. In many other jurisdictions there is no needa and it is ofetn done through a notary.

You don't BUT it is advisable given the questionable professionalism of many Estate Agents across the land.
We bought our new property near Torres Vedras with the help of a solicitor who was also a notary.
I re-drafted clauses of both the Contrato de Promessa & the Escritura and ran them buy the solicitor/notary by email.
Whole process cost less that 500€

When buying, then yes, you do need a lawyer.
