The new astra 2e sat launch went ahead yesterday , we will know by the year end what UK TV and where it can be received.

I have seen on other forums that the switchover and possible loss of the main UK channels is taking place from the 1st December.
Any other news ??

Sounds about right. 2E is still testing at 43.5ºE (I'm keeping an eye on it for obvious reasons) but looks like it'll be on the move any day now. Thereafter it'll be 10 or 11 days until switch-over- much like 2F this time last year.

Considering the number of expats who have sky subscriptions, which is a surprisingly large number (well over 500,000) that would bring in approximately £15 Million per month for Sky on the average subscription. It would not be in their interest to cut off a revenue stream of that magnitude

I think you figures are way out. yes Sky does receive revenue from outside of the UK but nothinhg like you suggest.
SKY like thhe BBC/ITV is launching on demand internet based access routes which will be easier to block.

With a limited service.
There is at least one provider who has software that can identify those using a VPN to hide their location and block access.
Eventually anything worth watching will be pay for view , it may not be live TV and the signal stealers will be left with the rubbish.

If the European services would move to a US business model, that would work out fine.
In the US, netflix [and therefore their competitors as well] charge about $8 per month for unlimited streaming + downloads.
Result; lots of willing, paying customers and lots of profit.

I agree that is the way forward and it needs the BBC/ITV.Netflix, Sky etc somehow to overcome any legal obstacles regarding out of UK transmissions.
I would be happy to pay a reasonable sum to access their content. I do not need live access which is the reason behind the current UK only content.
At the moment the broadcasting companies are loosing out to far too many with sticky fingers tacking advantage of those who live outside of the Uk.
There would be no need for VPN providers or IPTV providers, the income would go to those who provide the programs.

A few HD viewers may have lost some BBC services today. This has nothing to do with the up-coming satellite change-over. Some services (BBC1 Wales for example) have changed over to HD, but are now carried on Astra 2F's UK beam which we cannot receive here. SD versions as-yet unaffected.

Actually it seems that BBC SD services have gone, but the HD versions are there and working.

I have not yet done a box update for new channels and so this might change once I have.

But certainly BBC1 & BBC2 HD are working fine.
