Never thought about it before but STD is an unfortunate code for an airport 🙂

Well thanks for that. I'd never thought about it that way before either.

Sometimes a cheaper one way can be obtained by taking the journey in more than one stop. This also provides opportunities of having a town or city break along the way.

Last year on one of our trips, it was far cheaper and better arrival time to fly Ryanair Lisbon-Dublin-Manchester than Lisbon-Manchester direct. Only problem is having to leave and then re-enter secure area so any duty free booze in cabin bag purchased in Lisbon can be confiscated.

That's probably why Stansted's code is STN.

Surely the only duty free you can buy would be in Dublin before flying to Manchester and vice versa?

No. Any duty free liquids purchased at Lisbon ought to be placed in a secured sealed carrier bag by shop staff as your final destination is not Dublin. This would then permit you to take the duty free purchased at Lisbon through the security check point at Dublin for the onward flight to the final destination at Manchester. That's why they ask if the destination shown on your boarding pass is your final destination because, if it isn't, there is a standard protocol that should be followed.

If traveling on two tickets rather than a via, It's necessary to leave the secure area and go through security again. Wife had a soft cheese in her carry-on which cleared Lisbon security OK but confiscated at Dublin. When I asked the question about what would have happened with alcohol purchased at Lisbon, reply was that it would most likely be confiscated. Whatever the rules are, there's often a jobsworth on duty with his/her own interpretation.

There are some airports where even if one is "in transit" it is necessary to pass through a security check point; that is the purpose of the protocol of placing liquids purchased at a previous airport's duty free shop in a sealed carrier bag along with the purchase receipt. The answer you received at Dublin may well have been correct depending on how you phrased the question.

Bangkok is one such airport. It’s an absolute pain to have to go through security just to switch planes. And the queues can often be horrendous

I just booked a flight to the US for my wife to go to her father's funeral, I got to the last page, the payment page and a message popped up saying something to the effect that the flight was no longer available! I went back to the start and entered all the same info for the same flight, including seat assignment, I made it through to the payment page but this time the fare was $300 more! $2,100 round trip Faro-Lisbon-Newark.

Over the years I've found that to be a common occurrence for attempted US bookings. I've even got as far as completing booking only to receive an email hours later to say the booking failed and they are refunding my payment.
