Rosetta Stone
 

Has any one learnt portuguese using the Rosetta Stone course ?.

Im struggling a bit and wonder if its worth investing in this .

We nearly fell for this one.
Before making the investment make sure that the course is for Portuguese.
When we looked into it the course was for Brazilian Portuguese which is a slightly different animal.
They may have changed it, but if you are going to Portugal, Brazilian Portuguese is not useful and you have to kind of unlearn bits.
I could be wrong, but double check before making a costly mistake.

I had never heard of this so i looked at online......what a ******g price:eek: and it seems it is in fact Brazilian Portuguese which is like the difference between British English and er...Jamican English?!:unsure: Whatever... I certainly struggle to understand Brazilians!

p.s for that amount of cash that could pay for a hell of a lot of group lessons or even one to one lessons

Have trawled back through previous posts as I knew we had discussed this before and Sept 2008 I put one in re. PT language as the Resident had an article in July 2008 about the PT goverment adopting Brazilian PT as the national language.

thats what i thought, But if there was a positive feed back it may have been worthwhile.

Thanks for pointing out the Brazilian angle, looking again it clearly states "Portuguese ( brazilian )"

May have to go down the group leason route.

I know we all learn different but learning a very basic conversation "how are you,where you from,how much for a blow job" etc & learning stuff in an area of interest or work(if its to do with cars..learn all to do with them,building trade....all the names of the materials etc) is a good way to start out and get you speaking & importantly giving you some confidence to speak!

Feeling like a retarded twat in the beginning and Portuguese making you feel really stupid (some may tell you to "speak English as your Portuguese is shit"...ignore & continue in Portuguese) is all part and parcel of learning the langauge. Some find it easy & most find it difficult....don't give up as you will get there but don't ever expect to speak like a native as its unlikely to ever happen!

I have tried Rosetta Stone, Pimsleur and others. Hogwash! I would recommend Michel Thomas method. Try the foundation course and see for yourself. Simultaneously, sign up at Awful Portuguese and practice writing and reading over there. Check out http://groups.yahoo.com/group/awfulportuguese/.

To improve your listening check out http://modlang.newark.rutgers.edu/portuguesMain.php. They use Português sem fronteiras—2.

we struggle with the language, but keep trying to learn a new word/ phrase every day.
I have loads of language books, but the best thing we did , was to go back to basics , and we have loads of childrens books, ,amazon do a great range, and some are interactive so you learn how to say things correctly as well.
the other 2 books I find are a big help, are Taking off in portuguese and Practical portuguese, language for living here. Both have CDs and there are little exercises for you to do .:thumbsup:
The other thing we do , is have PT radio on in the car, hopefully learn by osmosis, and if you can find a film on tv, that is in english, with pt sub titles, that is a big help

Hi I have tried the linkwood cd's to get basic words and it fun to learn the way they do it,have a look on there site,you have to scroll down to find it,click on iy and try.Hope you find one you like thou.

After the comments on here and elseware regarding the Rosetta Stone course, i looked about and came across the linkword site . it looks good for the basics ( which is what i need ) and is a fraction of the cost.

Was it benificial for you ???? more importantly was it worth it .

I am doing Spanish classes at college in the UK. They use the BBC Book and CD along with the BBC website.

I have said this before on these forums...

Label every room & item in your home i.e "a cozinha" & all the items in it, the cupboard with a sub list of whats in it...plates, cups etc.... within 2 weeks I knew the name of all the household items...looks daft but works!

p.s put o/os or a/as before each item so you know if its femine or masculine

I'm pretty sure Portugues sem Fronteiras was the text book we used on my degree so I'd definitely go for that one... I'd start with the first book though!
