Before you give up might I suggest you contact the electoral officer for the area you were last registered to vote, explain your exact situation & ask them to confirm whether you are entitled to vote or not & if you are, what exactly do you have to do to register.

It is worth pursuing because there appears to be more to it than is first suggested by the site & the media.

The worst thing that can happen is you'll waste a few minutes of your time sending a few emails.

IMO it would seem fair to allow any British citizen the right to vote if they either lived OR still had assets in the U.K. (As those assets would/could be affected by political change)

If I left a couple of quid on my Mum's mantlepiece, would that count?

IIRC, wasn't it every UK citizen (outside if jail) was entitled to vote?

Which sounds like the sensible thing to do.

As long as they're not £1 coins, as they're discontinued currency on 15th Oct this year

Good Lord!

Has the pound become that worthless since I was last in the UK? Is it something to do with Brexit?

Nah, we decided to make it look more like a Euro following the Brexit vote. Here's hoping we can off load them on unsuspecting tourists.

It was part of the Cameron's government policy, and agreed by May, however, June 23rd 2016 got in the way, and now Brexit, and now a new GE, each time not giving the time for the legislation to get through all it's phases to become law, and it's probably not a major item on the governments mind at the moment.
