macliam, after I wrote to you I realised it did of course depend on the age of the tree when it was planted. Mine was about 4ft tall I think so maybe 5 years old or more.

Yes, I guessed yours would be a little more advanced! Mine came free, along with some other young trees, from a neighbour who had bought a shedload on the "advice" of a "friend". Ours each took several hours to plant, with the area cleared, hole dug, compost mixture infilled and watered. They were given no such advice and apparently just scraped a hole and threw them in. Unsurprisingly, we have had 100% survival through the last summer, whereas they have lost 90% of those planted.....

When they visited us before Christmas, they asked what fertilizer we had used to feed the trees. Rather like certain governments, some people seem to think the answer to a problem is just to throw money at it!
