Optician replaced the lens screw on a pair of my glasses yesterday (tiny tiny tiny screw - got lost and no hope of finding it) and when I wanted to pay, she said there was no charge. £10 for a pair of screws in the UK.

SWMBO had a very sore eye after working in the garden. We drove to Beja, but the specialist was off sick (!), so, on the way home we called into an optician for advice. He sat her down and gave the most thorough exam, found a small scratch on her cornea and gave her some eye drops which provided almost instant relief. No charge.

In the UK, she had a full eye test and bought new glasses, but on returning to Portugal she found she had some eye-strain. A visit to the same optician (this time it cost €40) found that the lenses prescribed in the UK were too strong in one eye..... and also that the previous scratch (undetected in the UK) had left a slight scar. He also recommended the use of polarised lenses to help avoid glaucoma....

Interesting reports on the opticians in Portugal - live and learn - perhaps a simple request for contact lenses replacements didn't show further capabilities of the one I went to ... Good to hear good reports!
