The other thing to consider is the visa(if you do not have an EU passport) and the status of your "partner" in Portugese law.I am sure someone can elaborate on the latters position

Liveaboard-no doubt you are an old hand at being an expat and can find your way around the system -and we all have to start somewhere-but over the years I have seen so many expats duped into buying a "lovely" property only to find that it is a money pit or the paperwork is so far awry that they end up with nothing more than a pile of bricks doing a house impersonation and I just do not want to see another one

Of course; but we tend to get a bit negative here, and sometimes I feel the need to be a bit more encouraging.
The point is that it is possible for the house to be legal even though it does not have a bathroom; of course legalities need checking as always.

Many people renovate after buying, and building (or rebuilding) the bathroom is quite common.
So while I know nothing about the OP or the house, The original question about the bathroom is not in itself reason to discard the property.

You are right in a way, just don't forget that a lot of us won't have the skills you have. It would be interesting to know more about the OP\property and renovating a bathroom is very different to installing a complete bathroom. A lot of people are not familiar wit septic tanks etc. and if the propery looks lived in without a bathroom, where does the waste go? Of course it could also be squatters so be careful with Usucapio.

I just have a bucket on my little 22 footer saily boat

Doubles up as the beer cooler when suspended with a line semi-submerged over the side too

I enjoy offering guests beers and waiting for them to ask where the heads (boaty for ' toilet') are
