NIF needed
I need to request an NIF but obviously this can’t be done in person at the moment. Is anybody aware of any online portal that I can use to achieve this please?

Thanks Red Eric. Well I guess it ain’t happening for quite a while then. I’m hoping that they might move to an online system as they do for business, I have all my paperwork digitized ready.
If everything is now getting postponed until mid summer its going to cause a hell of a backlog. Still its not the most pressing matter at the moment. Ever more grateful for the little things in life.

General rule of thumb seems to be that you need to be there in person if your identity needs establishing. There are quite a lot of things that can be done online here though, and still on the increase.
There is mention of making appointments for things that need your physical presence during this crisis but unfortunately nothing to do with Finanças is yet covered by the looks of it.

Re: NIF needed
Wonder if anyone can help me. I am trying to get a NIF. I went to Finanças 5 in Porto. Took my UK passport, copy of Airbnb contract to prove address in Porto. They are requesting proof of residence in UK. I have been living in Brazil so don't have this, I have a UK bank statement but they won't accept that. They say I have 2 options: 1) get a representante fiscal (I don't have anybody, I guess I could contract a lawyer); 2) get a document from the Camara Municipal declaring I am a European citizen (just went to the camara and it is closed due to coronavirus).
Anyone got any ideas? Am considering going to a loja do cidadão to try with a different person.

Fact that they are asking for UK proofs means that they are trying to register you as non-resident.
If you want to be register as resident, you need proof of PT address.
You can try getting Atestado or bring Certificate of residence from camara, but with everything being closed it wont be easy.

OK so we planned to use the Loja de Cidado when we first arrived but then Covid happened. We recently used a lawyer with PoA to get an NIF as they can do the process online. It cost 30 euros but took 3 weeks. Some people have done the same in less time.

To cfs - your "2) get a document from the Camara Municipal declaring I am a European citizen (just went to the camara and it is closed due to coronavirus)."
This sounds like your Residency Certificate which you may have to apply initially for at the Freguesia of your village/small town, and they give you a paper which you take to your Camara - Porto in your case. Or if you are living in Porto itself, you go direct to Porto Camara - depends on your temporary address. In the case of EU citizens this confirms (via your passport) that your have arrived in Portugal, on such a date - probably the date of the start of your rental contract, to reside (even if it is temporary address) at your AirBnB (need your contract for that), and that you are now a bonafide resident as EU citizen at that address. Once you have this Residencia Certificate, you can show that to the Financas to show that you ARE a resident and want you NIF as a resident. This will also get you into the Financas/Tax-System and you can ask to have access to their website, with log-on details to be sent to your approved address in Portugal (at the AirBnB!) then you can log on for lots of useful access and info about Admin in Portugal.
Brazil has got nothing to do with this, nor has your UK address, nor your UK bank account. If you have anything actually addressed to you at your temporary address, that willl help to show that you are actually living there - eg bank statement, phone bill, etc, payment of the monthly rent receipt ?
Freguesias and Camaras are opening again but you may need to make an appointment online - depends on local arrangements - have a look at their website ...
