Thanks, Carvoeiro. Must have been a nightmare for you. We are trying to make things as simple and transparent as possible - hence no Portuguese property in our name (rented or owned in the current, 2018 tax year, no residential property in the UK as from April 2019, and arriving in Portugal early 2018. Hence we feel that we should not potentially transgress any rules in either country. If that is all ok, then the only issue is whether our business sale will be seen as a 'gain' that fits in with the NHR regulations - I am a financial adviser myself (hence I am a bit nit-picky on facts!) and what will be sold is a client bank - I suppose that will fit into the category of 'goodwill'. Nothing physical is being sold.

Best wishes, David

Thanks, Carvoeiro!.... whereabouts are you in Portugal? We're thinking of going somewhere central.

originally in the Algarve - now an hour north on the Alentejo coast
both are nice and have different advantages
i also looked in the centre - almost bought a house close to Tomar and looked all around that area Coimbra Viseu etc - just decided we wanted the better winters and a bit more life than the area seemed to offer
If you live South of Fatima then the weather improves - improves again if you live below Setubal all the way to the Algarve
the Campo seems idylic - but when no-one speaks english and the nearest shop is a 40 minute drive in the rain to buy a lightbulb - or your car breaks down - reality sets in fast
