Apologies for pedantry here but it's not actually law yet - as the article says, it's now subject to review by a parliamentary commission where it's already known that it'll be subject to alterations owing to concerns expressed about the amount of the proposed fines, amongst other things.

Parliament has approved it in principle, though, so it's to be expected it will be passed into law in due course.

All roadsides are being mowed and strimmed by workcrews, out to 10 meters. How much does that cost?
Only because smokers throw lit butts out car windows.

Quite correct , I should have written "Bill" instead off "Law"

Is that really the reason?

I assumed it was to protect drivers, keep the escape route clear in case of fire and prevent fires crossing roads once they have taken hold

The continued popularity of smoking is something I do notice in Portugal.
But I do remember a dinner with the witnesses to our wedding 30 years ago.... cigarette followed by starter, followed by cigarette, followed by main course, followed by cigarette in lieu of a dessert and another with the coffee. Even at the time I thought this was a bit excessive - and I was a 30 a day man then!!

Lentisc is an unknown quantity at this point
Default Re: New Law :- Cigarttee "but's"

I know it's slightly off topic, but why do I as a non smoker, (ex) have to sit indoors at Cafes and Restaurants on a nice pleasant evening, just to avoid the plumes of smoke from nearby smokers.

Back on topic, we have had 2 field fires in our village recently caused by discarded smoking materials.

Passing laws is one thing, enforcing them is another!

IMO the best hope for a reduction in the number of discarded butts (about half the litter, by number of items, that I pick up along my frontage before I mow, is cigarette butts, the rest is fast food cups and wrappings, sweet wrappers, and an occasional bottle or drink can), is a reduction in the number of smokers.

I had the impression that you live elsewhere than in a slum.

Rednecks don't live in slums. ..... I'm not one, I would hasten to add! But they are omnipresent in my neck of the woods.

I have gone out on occasion and collected rubbish from along side nearby roads, and collected as many as 100-150 cans* from about half a mile of road that was completely clear of rubbish a couple of months earlier. The amounts of litter that gets thrown out of vehicles is staggering. And then there is fly tipping.

* Most, probably three-quarters, were beer cans, so there are at least two, and quite possible three, laws that are being broken and not enforced - littering, "open container" (alcohol being consumed in a moving vehicle), and probably drunk driving too.

Already a fineable offence in the UK. A girl I know got a fine through the post as CCTV had picked her up discarding a butt from her parked car right in front of a camera.

I blame the motor manufacturers for not putting ash trays in cars anymore 😏😏
