Re: This may be useful to some non residents
Bigger question to some might be, during the transition period will Brits be able to choose to be taxed as a Portuguese, when selling a property?
And if so can they can reinvest in any EU country, (will UK still be considered an EU country during the transition period?) any, or all of the proceeds of sale and not then pay CGT on that part which is reinvested and only pay tax on 50% of any remaining gain. Unlike non residents of the EU who pay 28% tax on all of the gain.

Of course Brits will be able to move their money wherever they want to, question is during transition will the Portuguese Tax authorities allow reinvestment in a property in the UK during the transition period to end Dec 2020.
That will need 2 decisions:
1) Are British property owners in Portugal considered as members of the EU by the Portuguese tax authorities, and
2) WIll the UK itself be considered as still being part of the EU
My guess is that the answer is `no` in both cases, as there would be no advantage to either the EU or Portugal.

I would say very useful, as i see here a possibility to extend to 2022 !!!
Quote from article:
`The same would apply to British citizens moving to the EU during the transition period, which is expected to end on 31 December 2020, but it could be extended up to December 2022. This is because freedom of movement would continue to apply during this time.`

I'm not even hopeful that we will even have till end 2020. It looks more like a no deal is a good chance.

I agree completely. Everyone is assuming there will definitely be a transition period until the end of this year but it's not impossible that there won't be.......... and if there's one thing this last 2 1/2 years should have taught us it's that no politician of any party should ever be entirely trusted to keep his/her word.

Workers rights, EU standards e.g. are cancelled. Will the EU agree to the unilaterally modified agreement? He can then easily blame EU for not giving in. BoJo's cozying up to Trump for a deal. He travels to US before negotiations with EU begin. Doesn't sound good for me. May be I've become too pessimistic over the outcome.

Certainly Javids talk today will for sure not go down well in Brussels. Be interesting to see if they react.

It should not impact the Withdrawal Agreement, though could well generate a poorer trade deal or a no trade deal exit, either of which would hardly be good news for the UK. Seems a pretty aggressive stance, to me.

Nothing is for sure yet. It helps to read what the resp. country publication says. The info from the Brit. side makes you believe all is sorted out.

We will know within the next week.
But I am really worried: when it is all done and dusted, do you think we will be able to find anything else quite so meaty to speculate endlessly (and I certainly include myself!) about? Got to worry about something, you know.
