Lisbon restaurants ?
 

Have our first trip to Lisbon, with 3 nights stop-over. Will be staying at Hotel Avenida in downtown district of Baixa. Appreciate a couple of suggestions for evening meal withwife, and even maybe nice cafes for daytime. Thanks.

Something of a Lisbon institution, I would suggest Bom Jardim for delicious piri-piri, good house wine and a nice cheap bill at the end!

There are many restaurants and cafés around the Estaçao de Rosio, (Rosio Square) in central lisbon; especially in the streets just south of it, that is towards the river. When eating at an outside café beware of pickpockets.:thumbup:
Don't forget that Lisboa is very hilly.:)

Rosio square is WELL dodgy,unfortunately :(... tourist magnet,therefore a scrote magnet too.

A few suggestions :)...I never eat out in Lisbon,so can't help with that,unless you want an Indian. I think the following are worth a look from a 'touristy' point of view.

The oldest cafe in Lisboa,right on Rosio square.

A taxi ride,but worth it (Lisbon taxis are very reasonable,but check the fare before you get in)

Bairro Alto,wonderful area for a wander.

If you do go down to Belem,you could call at the docks (where the cruise ships come in)...it's like a boardwalk type thing,with loads of different Restaurant/bars (including Irish :lol:)...not cheap,but nice for a drink and you are literally almost underneath the 25th Avril bridge (The one that looks like the Golden Gate)...and can look across at the statue of Christ (Like the Rio one).

Concur with Cleri re. Rossio square, the only part of Lisbon that felt particularly edgy to us.

Have been to Lisbon 3 times but always stay in Cascais and get the train in during the day, PT friends told us to be extra careful with bags, wallets etc. and we could not believe the big police presence in the area and at night they warned us to be doubly careful.

I wouldn't go anywhere near the square at night.(well I did once)...full of drug addicts and scary people!...wild eyed beggars etc.It's not a nice place to be.
What's that area just up from it..Mem Moniz?...something like that...stay well away from there,even during the day!

It's just like any other big city...no worse,but best you are aware :)

Thanks Cleri - all added to our notes. 'Er in doors had hair done today, so she's ready ! Many years living in Eastern Europe, we're generally on our guard for petty theives, but thanks for warnings all :thumbup:

I really like Resto de Chapito in Rua Costa de Castelo. Good food and reasonably priced. Great views as well.

If you want something really special I recommend Olivier, they have two restaurants- one does a gourmet tasting menu and is bright and lively, the other offers more choice and is cosy and romantic- the food is amazing and a real treat.
