Default "Leasing" instead of a mortgage

A friend is trying to get a mortgage for a Portuguese apartment from a Portuguese bank. Because he is in his 50s they are saying that the life assurance component of a mortgage would be prohibitively expensive. Instead they are proposing a leasing arrangement over 7 years.

I imagine this means he techically leases the apartment for 7 years, then at the end of the 7 years the apartment becomes legally his.

Does anyone know more about this subject, please?
