Question How/when can classic cars be used

I've read about importing a classic car into Portugal but I'm wondering how and when can classic cars be used?

In Australia and the USA (I don't know the system in the UK) you have the choice of registering it as a "classic car" and receiving special classic car number plates, but with these there are restrictions on when and/or for what purpose you can drive the car. Or, you can register it as a normal car (even really old ones from say the 1920s) and use it as a daily driver just like a modern car (drive to work, take the kids to school, shopping, etc.). Most people register them as a classic car because registration and insurance costs are much much cheaper.

What's the options and rules in Portugal?

I'm sure there are expats in Portugal with classic cars. I'd rather the insight of an expat who has gone through this.

Maybe he ignored because it was white in colour? Who buys a sports-car in Old English White apart from a school Headmaster?

MGA are nice cars except geared too low for modern road conditions from what I've heard. Many of them in Australia have had a rear end from a Wolseley fitted.

Agreed about the gearing although on the twin cam it was reasonable. But I like white cars especially in a sunny climate.

I also had a TR4 Surrey top with overdrive and that would cruise very nicely at over 100 mph with it's long stroke engine doing around 4000 rpm. Before the motorway speed limit was applied.

Sadly it ended it's days after hitting on the wrong side of a dual carriageway a Hillman and a brand new Ford Escort driven by a policeman who made an excellent witness to confirm I was in the right!

Wow, surrey top with overdrive...what a pity. Were there seat belts in a TR4?

Actually, I think white doesn't look bad at all on a TR4 especially with when you add wire wheels.

There's chalk marks around the car...they must have called in crash investigators.

What did you buy with the insurance money?

The car was purchased with standard steel wheels, it understeered atrociously, however I was given a set of standard TR6 steel wheels which from memory were an inch wider and even when fitted with my original tyres turned the car into a perfectly balanced vehicle and a delight to drive.
Replaced with a 1275 Mini Cooper S.
The TR achieved about 34 to the gallon on a run, the Mini less than 20 to the gallon!

I also had a Mark 1 Frogeyed Sprite until my then girlfriend hit a tree, now my wife of 51 years.

In my last reply I mentioned a 1275 Mini Cooper S.
Obviously I was having a SENIOR moment the car was the 1071 Cooper S

Nice one Loafing
At the time I owned the Frogeye I did 70,000 miles in it most was for work at 1 shilling and 1 pence per mile.
A complete replacement of engine and gearbox was required, but a fun car to drive.

Back in 1966, before we got married in 1967, I had my first MG Midget with an 1100cc engine (my first car). We toured France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and ended up in Venice. All our camping gear, including a two 10-man Army ration packs, fitted in the boot whilst the spare wheel was strapped to the luggage rack. People at the camp sites couldn't believe it when we unloaded everything and I inflated the tent. Those were the days and we are still married.
