Horses

Thinking of bringing my horse over and I would like to know what the price of hay is in central Portugal. I would also like to meet up with other people with horses here.

It depends where you are calling 'Central Portugal'?....I live on the coast and pay 3 to 4 euros for a small bale and 20 to 25 euros for a large one

Normal "hay" in Portugal is not such good quality. The top equestrian establishments buy their hay from northern Spain, the pyrenees area where,it appears good quality seed hay grows well. The normal Portuguese stuff is more for the cellulose content. Alfalfa is a good alternative.
Alfalfa is called "lucerna" in Portugues and hay is called "feno" pronounced fenoo

lol...is there such a thing as 'normal hay' in Portugal?....I get some which is wonderfull...but it is a mixture of grass and oats...they also make 'oat hay' which is an oat variety cut green with the seed head still on and in the bale. You can get good hay locally but you need to inspect it closely and as you say ...suppliment with alfalfa (also available as nuts) and hard feet as necessary. My horses are much healthier now they are away from the 'cream cake shop' of English grass

I refer to the hay as sold by the Alentajano traders. They seem to be the biggest dealers and during the years i kept horses they supplied my hay. Hence my using the word "normal".Very sorry if my post distressed you in any way,i was only trying to be helpful.:confused:

You should speak to Christine at Central Portugal Horses. Her website is www.centralportugalhorses.com.

Her husband Robert also supplies feed across Europe.

Not only that but you can go and get compost from her for free.....complete end to end supply chain!!!!
