Does anyone know where I can find a supplier of guttering in the eastern Algarve

Try any of any of the big diy stores, IZI, AKI. MAXMAT etc.

We need to do the same but of course PT houses have no soak away so you will need to make sure that the water exits the down pipe well away from the house.

Casa Ambaca next to the Gran Plaza in Tavira does guttering. :)

FWIW, I'm looking at various alternatives a part of our current building project in the central zone and using one of the companies that come in and put up the rolled aluminium guttering is a similar price to buying pre formed from the builder's merchants and putting it up yourself.

Try Montalgarve its a builders merchants on the N125 several miles on the left hand side after the traffic lights at Fuzeta/Moncarapacho going towards Olhao. (Tel 289 822 880)

Recently I needed a part for a Geberit cistern and tried all the local places near to Tavira, plus AKI / Mat Diver in Faro and this one stocked them.

They seem to be aimed at the drainage / plumbing side of the construction business.

All I can add is :- A few years back we put up a lot Plastic Guttering for a Client & after 2-3 years it started to "twist" due to the heat ,then there was a hail storm which beat it to pieces.

In my opinion Aluminum is the way to go

That's interesting to know. I was thinking of going for some PVC type. Surely they must come with some sort of warranty. I don't mind aluminum - I just think it might be a tad more noisy and you'd have to paint it if you wanted it to blend in.. .

The aluminium guttering that the specialist companies take off a role, form & fix is already powder coated so doesn't need any painting. I had it on my house in Africa & at 10+ years old, it still looked as good as new. :)

Someone told me that [in my area at least, the Vicentina national park] planning permission was required for guttering, and would not be given since guttering isn't traditional here.

I find it really strange that in a hot country that can experience water shortages they are not prepared to harvest rain water. :confused:

There is nothing to stop you building a cisterna to harvest water, that is how it has been done for thousands of years.

As EMR says, the traditional way is to have a cisterna and the more modern version is a large umpteen litre plastic water container that (IIRC) can be bought for about €40 or €50 for a 5' x 5' x5' version.
